We've had several requests for more sunset, waterfall, and wild life pictures. In our search for these, this July hubby and I went to Alaska, one time zone farther west than California.

I didn't know what to expect in Alaska; possibly a barren land of ice-covered granite. I'd hoped to see the Northern Lights, but summer wasn't the time for sunsets or colorful night skies because it never got dark. The first photo is as close to a colorful sunset as we saw but we had better luck with waterfalls. While there's plenty of ice, some of it quite beautiful, as in picture three, there are also lush forests and thousands of lakes and rivers. It's a land where pioneers can still homestead and live off the land, working hard in summer to prepare for the dark, sub-zero degree winter.

Most of the wild life stayed viewable only through binoculars, and my shots of Bald Eagles, taken from a diaper-clad moving horse near Juneau, came out predictably blurred. This Squirrel reminded me of the Yogi Bear cartoons (am I dating myself?) with Yogi always trying to get goodies from the tourists. It came out of the brush when the Denali tour bus stopped for a break, and right up to the tourists, sitting up to beg for food. After approaching several different tourists this way and finding food was not forthcoming, it simply scampered back into the brush.

A short helicoptor ride from Juneau, which is accessible only by ship, leaves one standing on the Mendenhall Glacier, picture five. It's like walking on a big blue snowcone, but be careful. You DON'T want to slip and fall into one of the crevasses, which go down hundreds of feet and house underground (under ice?) waterfalls.
