We took these photos Saturday morning and evening, May 1, 1999. The morning air was calm so the balloons stayed near the launch area. The balloonists may not have enjoyed the calm, but it created a photographer's paradise. Never before have we seen as many balloons bunched so tightly.
The night shots are from the evening's balloon glow. The fire that inflates the dozen-or-so tethered balloons makes them glow, usually one or two balloons at a time. Once or twice in the evening the announcer counts down and the balloons all light at once, as shown in picture 4.
