Spring hit the high desert like paint hitting a fan. We've had six inches of rain this year, three times the average rainfall. Suddenly lawn-less yards are full of grass and the the desert sand is carpeted with dozens of varieties of yellow, white, purple and orange wildflowers. Some of the locals who've lived up here 20 years or more are commenting on flowers they haven't seen for 10 years, or maybe ever. Three of this month's pictures are closeups of wildflowers on our own lot. The one at far right was taken by my husband, John.

We spend a lot of time around stables lately, and after taking several hundred horse photographs, we FINALLY have one to use on this page. That little Paint horse enjoys grazing on the wildflowers at the Joshua Tree Ranch (760-366-4794) where he works giving guided trail rides. Purple seems to be the favorite flower "flavor" among these discriminating mounts.
