Nosing around the Moon

Hubby and I just finished taking a course, Photography the Old Fashioned Way, from Phil Dunham, "The Shadow Catcher". He was teaching how to use a standard 35mm SLR camera, but I was using an SLR-like Olympus C-2100 digital camera that I'd previously found too complicated to use. I learned enough to get my first decent pictures of the moon.

So I went a bit overboard with moon pics here. Photos 1 and 5 were taken in Lost Horse Canyon, Joshua Tree National Park. In #5, move your eyes down from the right side of the moon to the "gnat" sticking up from the rocks. That's actually a rock climber. There were several up in the rocks with ropes that evening, with enough moonlight it looked like they might spend the night.

Photo 2 is a departure from "scenic", in answer to a request in our guest book for pictures of cats. That's our kitten, Clueless, on the country quilt. If you go to the world famous Country Kitchen restaurant in Joshua Tree Village, you'll see a small print out this in one of the curio frames.

Photo 3 is my favorite shot in a long time. March brought the first annual Family Kite Flying day to Yucca Valley. This is a 65 foot long gecko kite that was only in the air for a moment, as that Saturday the winds were unusually calm. Virtual Painter plugin for Paint Shop Pro was used to give the original photo ( below) a pastel look.

Photo 4 is the water tower at Desert Queen Ranch, which is now owned by and preserved within Joshua Tree National Park. Tours are available to the public, and otherwise it's off limits. We had the rare opportunity to go on a photo shoot with our instructor at 6:45 a.m. This was taken shortly after that time. My most acceptable picture for the class was of a rusty door hinge, but I wouldn't use it as wallpaper. Fortunately Mr. Dunham's first rule is "You take pictures for yourself, not anybody else." Thus, give me the flying gecko.
