Being on the Mendenhall Glacier felt like standing on a big blue snowcone. This is the ground.

Travel Recommendation: If you take only one cruise in your life, cruise Alaska. Scenery from the ship is spectacular and you see sights that can't be reached via land. A couple of my favorite excursions were
- The White Pass Railroad from Skagway
- The train roughly follows the White Pass Trail, aka the Dead Horse Trail, that hundreds of thousands of gold seekers, each with 2,000 pounds of provisions, trekked on their way to the Klondike in the 1890's. The scenery is gorgeous, but the history is full of treachery and cruelty. For a good book about this gold rush try The Klondike Fever by Pierre Berton. (No I'm not getting a commission. If you can find it at the library check it out there.)
- Helicopter to Mendenhall Glacier
- This was out of Juneau, Alaska's capitol, which is not accessible by land. To walk on the glacier was to enter a never-before-experienced environment -- perhaps a bit like walking on the moon.
I'd really recommend going through your travel agent for this type of vacation. If you don't have a travel agent try ours, Geri@BreaTravel.com 800-999-1445. She got us a much better deal on this trip than we could have gotten on our own.
By the way, I've saved all the photos for this trip in the largest format in which they were taken. Most have been resized and optimized for the web, rather than for printing. If you need a larger size or less-compressed photo I MAY be able to accommodate you on an individual basis. Just email.
